This one-hour presentation is designed for public health and medical professionals who wish to apply their knowledge of risk factors facing children in a family characterized by domestic violence. Repeated exposure to traumatic violence has long lasting implications for their health as they mature. Strategies to support these children will be applied to a scenario that involves two children recently placed in foster care. Participants will identify and discuss protective factors for these children and their non-offending parent so she may increase their safety, build resiliency and carve a path toward healing.

The DOULA CO-OP of Nevada (DCNV) conducted a study to address a critical gap in research concerning culturally congruent doula care. Our goal was to explore how culturally congruent doula support — where doulas share similar ethnic, racial, language, or religious backgrounds with their clients— affects childbirth satisfaction and mental health outcomes among Medicaid recipients in Nevada. We will present the findings of our study, in which we hypothesized that clients supported by culturally congruent doulas would experience fewer symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) in the immediate postpartum period compared to those supported by non-culturally congruent doulas.
